Why do I struggle to charge what my work is worth?

Undercharging is almost never a pricing problem. It's a protection problem. Somewhere early, you learned what money means — judgment, stress, trouble — and your system still runs that old rule. In the Creator Alignment framework, the low price isn't a mistake. It's protection.

Want to change this in yourself? Understand it first

The moment you probably recognize

You’re sitting with a price. You know it’s too low — you can feel it. Then you think about raising it, and it stops being about the offer. You start wondering if people will still buy. You compare yourself to others. Something tightens around the idea of asking for more.

So the number stays where it is. Again.

The obvious explanation is wrong

The standard advice: charge your worth. Use value-based pricing. Here’s a formula.

But notice — you already know the number is too low. Knowing was never the hard part. If knowledge fixed this, it would have been fixed years ago. The hard part is what happens inside you the moment the number starts moving up.

What’s actually happening

Think back. The adults around you — what did they say about money? About people who charged a lot? “They’re so expensive. Who do they think they are?” Hear that enough times from people you look up to, and something gets installed. Not as a choice. As a fact: people who charge a lot get disliked.

Or maybe it was simpler. Maybe there just wasn’t enough money — and you watched what that did to the people around you. The stress. The arguments. Money wasn’t neutral. It was the thing that caused pain.

Think of it like an allergy. If gluten makes you sick, you don’t reach for the bread. Not as a decision — your body just knows. That’s what happens when you try to raise the price. Your system already knows what money means, and it protects you before you’ve even thought about it.

And here’s what the low price gives you: safety. Nobody raises an eyebrow. Nobody asks who you think you are. The old rule stays satisfied — and you never have to find out what people would actually pay, or what that answer might say about you.

What it costs if it keeps running

After a while you stop having prices. You just have reactions.

Every low invoice quietly confirms the old story — that receiving more is dangerous. You’re not just underpaid. You’re rehearsing the rule, year after year, in your own handwriting.

Common questions

Isn't undercharging just a beginner phase?
Sometimes. But if you have clients and results and the price still can't move, the phase isn't the explanation anymore. The assessment shows you →
Will a pricing formula fix this?
A formula can tell you what the market pays. It can't change what receiving more means to you. That's why you can know the right number and still not charge it. Answer the question above →
About Creator Alignment
What is Creator Alignment?
A diagnostic framework for creators who know what to do but don't do it. It doesn't measure who you are. It compares what you say is stopping you with what you actually do — and looks at the gap.
What do I get from the assessment?
Your signature: the most active protective pattern right now, and where it shows up — posting, pricing, launching, selling. Not a personality type. Not who you are. A snapshot of what's running you today, built from your own answers, in about two minutes. Start with one question →
Why hasn't a course or more knowledge fixed this?
Because new knowledge stacks on top of the explanation — it never reaches what's underneath. That's why course #17 doesn't work better than course #1. What changes things isn't more information. It's seeing your own pattern clearly. That's what the assessment is for →
How do I actually get free of a pattern like this?
Not by forcing yourself through it — you've tried that. It starts to loosen when you see it clearly: the pattern, and what it's protecting. That's the first step, and it's what the assessment gives you. What you do with it after — that's the work. But understanding comes first. See your pattern →
Is this therapy?
No. We're not clinicians, and this isn't treatment. But it's not another strategy course either. Creator Alignment works one level below where everyone else tries to solve this — underneath your explanations, where the pattern actually lives. The gap between what you say and what you do is just how we find it.
How long does the assessment take?
About two minutes. A handful of questions about what you've actually done — no right answers, no essays. You get your signature and a free profile right away. Start with one question →
